Common electrocardiogram variations pre‐ and post‐marathon

چکیده
Electrocardiographic changes can be present in marathon runners. These findings may be misinterpreted as malignant by healthcare providers. For example, incomplete right bundle branch block, early ventricular repolarization, and left ventricular hypertrophy by voltage criteria alone are quite common in athletes, yet considered benign.

Statins Attenuate the Increase in P-Selectin Produced by Prolonged Exercise
Strenuous endurance exercise increases inflammatory markers and acutely increases cardiovascular risk; however, statins may mitigate this response. We measured serum levels of p-selectin in 37 runners treated with statins and in 43 nonstatin treated controls running the 2011 Boston Marathon. Venous blood samples were obtained the day before (PRE) as well as within 1 hour after (FINISH) and 24 h...
متن کاملEndocrine Response to an Ultra-marathon in Pre- and Post-menopausal Women
Ultra-endurance competitions are becoming increasingly popular but there is limited research on female participants. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in estrogen and the IGF-I system in women after an ultra-marathon. Six pairs of pre- and post- menopausal women were matched for race finish times;mean finish time was 20 hours. Blood samples were drawn 24 hours before the race, at...
متن کاملMinimal muscle damage after a marathon and no influence of beetroot juice on inflammation and recovery.
This study examined whether beetroot juice (BTJ) would attenuate inflammation and muscle damage following a marathon. Using a double blind, independent group design, 34 runners (each having completed ca. ∼16 previous marathons) consumed either BTJ or an isocaloric placebo (PLA) for 3 days following a marathon. Maximal isometric voluntary contractions (MIVC), countermovement jumps (CMJ), muscle ...
متن کاملImpact of marathon running on cardiac structure and function in recreational runners.
The present study examined the relationship between LV (left ventricular) function, markers of cardiac-specific damage and markers of oxidative stress in recreational runners following a marathon. Runners (n=52; 43 male and nine female; age, 35+/-10 years; height, 1.74+/-0.08 m; body mass, 75.9+/-8.9 kg) were assessed pre- and immediately post-marathon. LV function was assessed using standard M...
متن کاملThe effect of lecithin supplementation on plasma choline concentrations during a marathon.
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown that plasma and urinary free choline concentrations decrease significantly during a marathon, and that these decreases may be associated with decreased performance. OBJECTIVE In a pilot study, we sought to determine whether lecithin supplementation prior to a marathon would maintain plasma free and urinary choline concentrations and improve performance v...
